Chris Vallillo
Добавлен 6 апр 2011
Chris Vallillo is a singer/songwriter and roots musician with a natural affinity for American roots music. Performing on six-string and bottleneck slide guitars, he weaves original, contemporary, and traditional songs and narratives into a compelling and entertaining portrait of the Rural Midwest. Dirty Linen magazine described the music as, “vivid, original story songs” delivered with an “eye for detail and a sense of history” while Folk Wax Magazine Editor, Arthur Wood said “Vallillo’s guitar playing flows like warm honey and is a true aural Delight."
His prairie poet style has been compared to Edgar Lee Masters and Vachel Lindsay and you can hear the strains of the Carter Family and Jimmy Rogers reflected in his writing. It’s roots based original and contemporary folk with the rich acoustic textures of bottleneck slide, finger style and flatpicked guitars that echo the influences of Mississippi John Hurt, Norman Blake, Doc Watson and John Fahey.

Love this, Chris!
Thanks James!
Great Chris! Looks like a spectacular show!
Thanks Tom. I'll get more up after I get back from Indianapolis.
I bought a Kay archtop in 1957 when I first began guitar lessons. I paid $18.00 for it. It was a piece of junk. My teacher had me take it back to the store. It did not have any solid top, it was made of plywood. It was almost impossible to play as the strings were extremely high. The guitars made today by Eastman and many other companies from China and South Korea are very fine instruments. Kay and Harmony were the bottom end of the guitar industry. I had a music store in late 60's and would buy the Harmony Stella for my students. They retailed for $49.00 and I would rent them to the kids who could not afford them for 50 cents a week, and I charged $2.00 for the lesson. I had to file the nut down and adjust the bridge to make them playable. I taught a lot of kids on those cheap guitars.
Guys selling a 39 for 400 bucks. About to grab it probably I like this.
Thanks for your restoration passion Chris!
Nice job Chris, Very beautiful sir!
Thanks very much! I love these K-36 guitars. They always turn out good.
I own the same Silvertone 618. Mine is from the early 50’s original Burst finish
How’s it sound
I have an h602 I bought it off of a lady and the action is so high idk what to doo
Forever makes me weep, but because it's so true of the midwest farming community. So supportive.❤
Chris. Is it a spruce top? Nice playing. Sounds great. Thx. S
Absolutely wonderful guitar playing!
Thanks so much!
Nice guitar but I would use a mellower brand of strings. Thanks.
AHHH the voice of a duolian, Nothing like it ! Would have loved to hear it in open tuning with a slide but what you played in standard said enough . That is one lucky son in law!
I did actually put it in open tuning and played slide a bit on it just to try. Great sound! I had set it up for fingerstyle playing, though, so I didn't think it would sound as good on slide in the video.
@@chrisvallillomusic Nothing like a duolian Thank you for getting back to me!
Trust me, that son-in-law is appreciative. And I'm thrilled to hear the instrument *sing* again! Chris did an amazing job on it!!
Hi Gail! Hope you are doing well. This project was a joy, particularly knowing it's family history!@@HistoryHeights
Wow, that guitar sounds great!
Great performance! Congratulations!!!
So glad you added a bit of "Cliche Rag"!
Thanks Marc! I'm still buzzed from performing it with you at FARM. I'll be in touch soon.
Sounds amazing .
Sounds spectacular - great work.
I'm reminded of a line in a Leo Kottke song from long ago. "Its this kind of guitar, it brings out my best" fantastic Chris.
Awesome Chris. My friends from Wisconsin are Route 66 fans
Hello. What was the bridge type you put on the guitar? Thanks.
It's been a while, but it was probablya new old stock bridge (old harmony bridge that was never used).
Hi Chris, this is the first time I've looked a messages for a long time. This was so cute.
Fantastic! That tune loads up and just keeps getting better. What kind of picking do you call that? Not exactly claw hammer, way cool though.
Rocky gets some great sounds out of that tambourine, and he is a ball to watch. Love it!
Awesome!!! -Erinn & Dan
'Promo sm' 🤪
Alright how the heck did you get ahold of our old home movies? The Dobro sounds great!
Thanks! I think we all have some of those movies somewhere.
Great release!!
Great work Chris using family photos and home movies - so fun!
Thanks Kari!
Very smooth meaningful tone.
Is that black hair curly really yours, Chris? Smirk
This is a bunch of fun watching this one Chris.
Thanks! Chris
Thanks! Chris🎶
My pleasure!
My husband and I met this wickedly talented musician many years ago on a riverboat cruise. He was amazing, and amazingly talented, with an array of guitars, but with the “dulcimer guitar” being the most magnificent……..a real beauty! Definitely one of the best memories of our life: floating down the Mississippi, in a charming ol’ steam/paddle boat, listening to this music master gifting us with good old fashioned folk music notes, from a bygone era. Much obliged, Mr Chris! 🪕Continued best wishes on an truly gifted vocation!
Thanks so much!
this one still Available?
No, It went to its new home last fall. There are more instruments in the pipeline, but nothiung else up yet. Let me know if you are looking for something special and I'll see what I have.
i have a couple of these kay guitars i use electric flatwound strings on em serious quality considering ridiculous age 😅
do the tuners say "kluson" on them or are they blank like mine? i never could identify a date on either of mine 😅
my action is a bit uncomfortable on one of em, but it makes a 10/10 slide guitar +markley bottlecap
i left my "distressed" finish on both gives them character 😊 i like to think they are happy to be played often again
i keep both of mine tuned to open Gflat
Wonderful guitar work.
Would look better without the pick guard.
i grabbed one how else would u get 1940s-1950s era usa made wood instruments without paying astronomical prices? 😅 lovely sound though
Thanks! Chris
Recent info has come to light. It is a Harmony built guitar, not Kay.
I have a Broadway Harmony guitar that belonged to my grandpa. After he died I got it out of the attic. It is in tack but hollow with cobwebs inside. I can't find a serial number and I am sure it has not been played in a very long time. It looks like the one you are playing but the wood color is darker. It is worth restoring? It looks like the one you are playing but very dusty.
Harmony Broadway guitars were a better grade of Harmony archtop guitars. I believe I've restored three of these so far and I always keep my eyes open for an example worthy of restoration. Most have very nice grain and surprisingly beautiful finishes. The most common repair I do is a neck re-set, but occasionally do structural repairs and finish touch ups as well depending on the condition. If your instrument is just dusty and "cobwebbed" it should be a good candidate for restoration. In my experience, Broadway guitars are well worth the effort. Good luck!
I think you'd have an audience for the work you do on the guitars there Chris.
A modest audience, yes.
